Security Deposit Program
This pro bono signature program is a collaborative effort between Kilpatrick Stockton, Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. In this project, lawyers represent low income tenants, many of whom scrape together a month's worth of income to pay a security deposit, in seeking the return of deposits unlawfully withheld by landlords when the tenants move from the premises.
Grandparent Adoption Program
The Grandparent Adoption Program began in 1997 as a joint endeavor between the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and Kilpatrick Stockton. This program addresses the needs of relatives caring for children whose parents are absent due to incarceration, alcohol or drug dependency, abandonment, AIDS and other illnesses. These caregivers, most often grandparents, are raising these children and often exist on minimal welfare benefits and their Social Security retirement benefits. The Grandparent Adoption program allows grandparents and other relatives to formalize their relationships with grandchildren in their care, provide stability for the children, and make appropriate decisions about children's lives. The program now includes the Washington D.C. and North Carolina offices of Kilpatrick Stockton.
One client remarked, "Thank you for standing by me through this adoption. Now I have a real family, they are my children…they are legally mine. I truly want to thank you, I feel as though you are my angel."
Guardian Ad Litem
Kilpatrick Stockton has committed its attorneys and resources to create a Guardian Ad Litem Program with the Legal Aid Society of Northwest North Carolina and the Forsyth County District Court. Teams of Kilpatrick Stockton lawyers and paralegals are trained to represent the best interests of low income children whose parents are engaged in contested custody disputes.
Wills on Wheels
Kilpatrick Stockton, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP) and Legal Services for the Elderly (LSE) joined forces for "Wills on Wheels" workshops where Kilpatrick Stockton lawyers provide wills and advance directives for low-income senior citizens and seriously ill clients. Held twice a year, this project has provided representation for hundreds of eligible clients.
Upon leaving the workshop, one 90 year old woman sighed with relief, saying "Now I can go meet my maker!"
Landlord Tenant Project
Lawyers at the Winston-Salem office accept referrals from Legal Aid of Northwest North Carolina to represent low-income tenants in litigation against landlords often challenging substandard housing conditions and illegal eviction practices.
